Completely Splattered a String of Poems for the Fallen Emily Eileen Hodson Books

I am a fan of Emily Hodson's 'Pretty Unlikely' trilogy, so when I saw that she released her own poetry book 'Completely Splattered', I eagerly placed my order. I received the book today, and spent the next hour soaking up each and every one of her 17 poems. This book is relatively short, but beautifully written- and well worth the read. Emily has a style that I feel would appeal to so many teenagers. I've said it before, but I'll say it again- her works are definitely best suited for kids ages 12 to 19. She has that style of writing that they crave to read, and it easily peeks their interest.

This specific collection of poems was a deep look into Emily's mind. There are both positive and sad poems. They cover an array of emotions and situations. Some reminisce on happy spring days, others delve into the heartbreak and depression caused by young love. All are beautiful in their own right. Emily's style isn't about rhyming, but rather about versus- which each sentence speaking loudly in it's own poetic sense. As you move across the page, each fragment you read steps apart from the previous- and yet, by the end of each poem all of the sentences have blended together in perfect harmony.

A few of my favorite pieces were 'Glistening Beauty' (a tribute to the newfound sunshine that comes with melting winter days) and Stop. Look. Listen (the story of a girl who, as riding public transit, overhears and sees an array of human flaws along her trip). One that I found really interesting was 'Forest Knows Best' which is just a really unique poem that takes the beauty and harshness of nature and combines them in an eery and thought-provoking tale.

I really feel like this specific set of poems would make a great gift for a young woman in her teens or early twenties. At 22 so many of the relationship-oriented ones spoke loudly to me, and I appreciated the artistic sense of some of her more off-beat poems. Overall this was such a fun collection that went through an array of emotions and artistic fees. I appreciate Emily's style and am a huge fan of her work. If you've enjoyed her past publications, I highly recommend adding this to your bookshelf as well.
