Dear God,

My book is out and I’m in the dog box. Tom says I’ve ruined his authority at St Jude’s with the bit about his Tom and Jerry underpants and his penchant for Sugar Puffs.

The boys say their girlfriends have dropped them like hot cakes and that they’ll never leave home with a mother like me who reveals all.

And there’s a deathly hush from St Jude’s congregation who are slowly going into shock as a single copy does the rounds.

The only bright light is John Taylor, the Bishop of St Alban’s, who thinks it’s ‘Brilliant ----amusing and moving’. There’s a gift of discernment for you, God.

The Wife of the Rector

PS. Mother doesn’t like my photo. Says it makes me look like Auntie May who ran away with a Roman Catholic Jewish corset salesman.

With wit and warmth Audrey describes in her letters to God, life in the Grade 2 listed, crumbling, Georgian refrigerator, otherwise known as The Rectory. (The Church Times)

STOP THE PARISH, I WANT TO GET OFF ! was serialized on Radio One, Canberra, Australia, and on Premier Radio, London.

About the Author

Audrey and Tom live in a parish near Bognor Regis. Before coming to the UK for Tom to train for the ordained ministry as a late ordinand they lived in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

‘Dear God, why me?’ Audrey demands. ‘Five years ago I was the wife of a successful business man. I’d never manned a church hall tea urn nor run a jumble sale’.

Her three sons Derek, Anthony and Martin who are all for Dad doing his own thing don’t seem to realize that he has to ‘do it’ on a much reduced salary; that the Archbishop of Canterbury doesn’t grant bonuses.

When she met Tom he was agonizing over winning contracts. Now, 25 years later, he is agonizing over winning souls!

She is now the wife of the Rector of St Jude’s and Sammy and Pooky the rectory’s dog and cat.

This book is a gem. Don't miss it!

Written in the form of funny, often poignant, letters to God, it tells of a year in the life of the author and her family. Her husband Tom who, five years before, had given up a successful business career to heed the call of God, is now a newly ordained minister in the Parish of St Jude's in the Church of England. There are three almost grown up sons, Derek, Anthony and Martin who, are very enthusiastic about their Dad doing his own thing, but they don't realise `that he has to `do it' on a much reduced salary; that the Archbishop of Canterbury does not declare dividends, and that fillet of steak is a nice memory.' To complete the family, there is Pooky the cat and Samuel Smudge the black Labrador who, with his owner `can clear the local green of dog walkers in two minutes flat,' and who prompted the author to write, `Dear God, would you please have a word with St Francis about a `born again' dog.' And I mustn't forget the author's mother, who does tend to go on a bit about the family's `changed circumstances' and provides the odd bit of fillet of steak to help ease their `suffering.'

We also meet members of the congregation of St Jude's, who typify the usual characters one finds in church communities. The author pokes fun at many of them in a gentle, witty, but never unkind way. She has a wonderful sense of the ridiculous as she relates hilarious episodes in the lives of the various protagonists. There are laughs on every page. But make no mistake. This is no mere lightweight book. It also contains deep spiritual truths which reveal the devout Christian faith of the author and her husband.

As a minister myself, as well as a wife and mother, I can identify with much that Audrey Carter has written, but the book would be just as enjoyable to a lay person. Do yourself a favour. Try a sample today, and I'm sure you will want to buy the whole book.
