Gloria Mallette's sixth novel, Distant Lover, looks at the effects of love on children as they mature into adults. Meet Tandi, a wife and mother. She seems to have the life her friends can only dream about but Tandi is in turmoil. Her marriage is on the verge of destruction, her husband Jared cheated on her several years ago and Tandi can't forget it. Her father Sporty, who was a single parent, is a crotchety old man who is bitter and treats Tandi worse than imaginable. Tandi's older brother Glynn hasn't the time or inclination to listen to anything she says. As a result, Tandi longs for love from someplace.
Tandi is fighting depression, disillusionment and pent up anger. She longs for her life to be different in some way. She makes seemingly positive and negative changes. She leaves Jared and takes their son MJ. In her haste to depart she winds up moving in with Sporty. He suffers a stroke, so her quick place to stay becomes more permanent. Glynn is only helpful finding a nursing agency that will place home health aides in the home to relieve Tandi of some of the burden, stress and responsibility. Sporty runs the great majority of them off. Even in his stricken stage, he's intimidating and ruthless. He eventually meets his match and is introduced to an aide who can handle him, with her mere presence right when Tandi can take it no longer. Tandi is amazed at the change in Sporty upon meeting this new aide.
In the midst of it all, Tandi reminisces on how life could have been and wonders what her first love, Brent can bring to her life. Ironically, he has returned to town after two wives and two-kids and has settled back into the swing of things. Tandi and Brent attempt to rekindle their old flame. Is this what she truly wants? Is this how life should have been for her?
Distant Lover covers a lot of territory through well-paced plot and character development. Through Tandi's entire journey to self-acceptance, I felt the realness in her persona. Gloria Mallette has crafted yet another memorable novel.
IRRESPONSIBLE!!!... that's definitely the way a married man who cheated on his wife should be labeled and viewed. BUT only Gloria Mallette can balance the scales and make you views things with an open mind to all parties involved.
Jared Crawford, an established lawyer succumbs to a client who literally throws her sex point blank at close range into his face. Instead of running and rejecting the look of a wet pink vagina in his face, he decides to touch it... and kept stroking it to his pleasure until he got busted!
Well, I say that's reason enough for his wife to find it hard to forgive him, especially after he kept some of the love letters from his client for keepsake memories.
But it doesn't stop there. Somehow he winds up in bed with Evonne, his wife's so-called best friend. (Read the book and discover that secret for yourself.)
But Jared's wife, Tandi is not totally the innocent one here. She's got a little something going on herself. She has undisclosed plans for her first love, Brent. Only to be surprised that he has some deceptive plans of his own.
Although Tandi is very much the victim here (especially psychologically) she's got a heavy cross to bear.
Her son, Michael Jared (MJ) wants his parents to give him a happy home again; Tandi's brother Michael seems aloft but it supportive in his own way. Tandi & Jared's good friend, Daina is the glue to keep the family together.
Tandi's father, Glynn Belson is a character that adds fuel to the fire and stress to Tandi's mental anguish.
The author used excellent skills with weaving hilarious dialog & flavor throughout Tandi's delicate dilemma. I howled out loud and had to put the book down when reading chapter 43.
Gloria Mallette has a talent in writing that'll grip your attention when reading her novels. (She made me miss a day of work to finish this book!)
I didn't take a breathe of relief from reading until I got to chapter 52; (it's a hard story to lay down).
In conclusion, "DISTANT LOVER" would be also considered "forbidden fruit" for the characters who had their love burning for.
Tandi was not the only one guilty of this...there was Evonne...then Glynn Belson Sr.,... then Jaren Crawford - all had yearnings - but the motives were all questionable.
Five stars is NOT enough for this one.

On first look at the title of this book, you'd think this might be a story about long distance relationships. I found myself humming Marvin Gaye's song with the same title. But it wasn't, it was about relationships but distance wasn't the problem at all!
Secrets surface as we meet Tandi Crawford, it's hard being in a relationship by yourself especially when you're married. When love is absent, how can repairs be made? After 10 years in this loveless marriage Tandi finds herself thinking of an unrequited love from her past. When she decides to take her child and leave, she finds herself at her childhood home with the Father who'd rather not be bothered. As their pseudo relationship withers on, Tandi starts to realize things about other relationships in her life. Will she be able to repair them, or will she end up lost and stuck in her past wondering about her future. Or will love and forgiveness be the balm she needs to be whole?
This was a good book from beginning to end, you'll take an emotional ride as lies, cheating and self respect play a pivotal part of uncovering the truth and working toward a breakthrough and finding closure.
